Lisbon's oldest quarter of steep alleys and laundry lines. Get lost on the way up to the castle.

  2. Castelo de São Jorge

Moorish castle walls on the highest hill, with panoramic views over the river.

  3. Miradouro de Santa Luzia

A tiled terrace with bougainvillea and views over Alfama's rooftops to the Tagus.

  4. Fado in Alfama

    Alfama

Hear Portugal's melancholy fado music over dinner in one of Alfama's small taverns.

Tip: Talking during a song is frowned upon.

A 16th-century fortress on the riverbank, symbol of the Age of Discoveries.

Watch the sunset from the viewpoint, then join the street-drinking crowds of Bairro Alto.

Day 3 · 4 stops

  1. Pena Palace, Sintra

    Palácio da Pena, Sintra

A colorful romantic palace on a forested peak, 40 minutes from Lisbon by train.

Ramparts snaking along the ridge with views to Pena Palace and the Atlantic.

  3. Quinta da Regaleira, Sintra
