Day 1 · 4 stops

  1. Þingvellir National Park

    Þingvellir

Walk between the North American and Eurasian plates at the site of Iceland's first parliament.

  2. Geysir & Strokkur

    Haukadalur

Strokkur erupts every few minutes, shooting water up to 20 m.

Tip: Stay on paths — the ground and water are scalding.

  3. Gullfoss

A huge two-tiered waterfall dropping into a narrow canyon.

  4. Secret Lagoon, Flúðir

    Flúðir

A natural hot pool, quieter and cheaper than the Blue Lagoon, to end the day.

Day 2 · 4 stops

  1. Seljalandsfoss

A waterfall you can walk behind on a slippery path.

Tip: Bring a waterproof jacket. Gljúfrabúi, hidden in a canyon, is a few minutes north.

  2. Skógafoss

A 60 m curtain of water. Climb the stairs for the view, or start the Fimmvörðuháls trail behind it.

  3. Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach

    Reynisfjara, Vík

Basalt columns, sea stacks and black sand.

Tip: Sneaker waves here are deadly — stay well back from the water.

  4. Vík í Mýrdal

    Vík

A small village with a hilltop church; a good overnight stop.

Day 3 · 4 stops

  1. Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon

    Fjaðrárgljúfur

A mossy serpentine canyon with an easy rim path.

Tip: Closed at times to protect the vegetation; check before driving there.

  2. Skaftafell & Svartifoss

    Skaftafell, Vatnajökull National Park

A 1.5-hour return hike to a waterfall framed by black basalt columns.

  3. Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon

    Jökulsárlón

Icebergs calving off Breiðamerkurjökull drift toward the sea. Seals often swim among them.

  4. Diamond Beach

    Breiðamerkursandur

Chunks of glacier ice washed up on black sand across the road from the lagoon.

Tip: From here it's about 5 hours back to Reykjavík.
