Day 1 · 4 stops

  1. Alcatraz Island

    Pier 33, Embarcadero

Ferries leave Pier 33 for the former federal prison; the audio tour is excellent.

Tip: Tickets sell out weeks ahead in summer — book early.

  2. Fisherman's Wharf & Pier 39

    Pier 39

Sea lions on the docks, sourdough bread bowls and clam chowder.

  3. Cable car on the Powell-Hyde line

    Hyde St & Beach St

Ride the hills from the wharf toward Union Square, past the top of Lombard Street.

Tip: The Powell & Market end has the long lines — board at Hyde & Beach instead.

  4. Chinatown & North Beach

    Grant Ave, Chinatown

The oldest Chinatown in North America, then Italian cafés and City Lights bookstore next door.

Day 2 · 4 stops

  1. Golden Gate Bridge

    Golden Gate Bridge Welcome Center

Walk or bike across the bridge; Battery Spencer on the north side has the classic view.

Tip: Fog often clears by midday; bring a jacket either way.

  2. Lands End Trail

    Lands End Lookout

A cliff-top trail with views of the bridge, shipwrecks and the Sutro Baths ruins.

  3. Golden Gate Park

Gardens, the Japanese Tea Garden, the de Young Museum and bison in a 1,000-acre park.

  4. The Mission & Dolores Park

    Mission Dolores Park

Murals on Balmy Alley, a burrito at a taqueria and the skyline from Dolores Park.
