Day 1 · 4 stops

  1. Zion Canyon Visitor Center

    Springdale, UT

Catch the free shuttle here — Zion Canyon Scenic Drive is closed to cars most of the year.

  2. Angels Landing

    The Grotto trailhead

A narrow fin of rock with chains and sheer drops on both sides; one of the most famous hikes in the US.

Tip: A permit (by lottery) is needed for the chains section. Scout Lookout, just before it, needs none.

  3. Emerald Pools

    Zion Lodge

Short trails to pools and seasonal waterfalls below red cliffs.

  4. Canyon Overlook Trail

    Zion–Mount Carmel Highway

A one-mile trail to a view down Pine Creek and Zion Canyon, past the famous tunnel.

Tip: Parking is tiny; go early or late.

Day 2 · 4 stops

  1. Riverside Walk

    Temple of Sinawava

The easy paved mile from the last shuttle stop to where the trail ends and the river begins.

  2. The Narrows

    End of Riverside Walk

Wade up the Virgin River between canyon walls up to 1,000 feet high; Wall Street, about two hours in, is the narrowest stretch.

Tip: Check the flash-flood forecast; rent canyoneering shoes and a stick in Springdale.

  3. Court of the Patriarchs

    Zion Canyon Scenic Drive

A short climb to a viewpoint of three sandstone peaks.

  4. Springdale

    Springdale, UT

The town at the park gate, with restaurants, outfitters and a great view of the Watchman at sunset.
